If you’re searching for a Glacier National Park elopement photographer, this blog shares real elopement experience, along with helpful insight into what it’s like to get married in Glacier! From location ideas to planning tips, this post will help you envision your own elopement in one of the most beautiful places in Montana!
Being a Glacier National Park wedding photographer means that I get to document some of the most meaningful days in one of the most beautiful places in the country! I get to combine two things I love: photographing real love stories and exploring beautiful places! I truly feel lucky every time I head into the park to capture another beautiful story.
Glacier National Park is the perfect backdrop for your wedding or elopement! But it also comes with unique challenges that not every photographer is knowledgeable about. That’s why hiring a local Glacier National Park elopement photographer who knows the area well can make a huge difference in your overall experience!
Here’s what I bring to the table as someone who specializes in Glacier elopements:
1. Location Expert
Choosing where to elope in Glacier can be overwhelming. I help couples narrow down the best ceremony and photo locations based on lighting, accessibility, privacy, and views!
2. Understanding Permits + Park Rules
Getting married in Glacier National Park requires a special use permit, and there are specific rules around group sizes, ceremony spots, and even where you can park. I know that this can be a bit overwhelming, which is why I walk my couples through the entire permit process and stay up to date on the park’s guidelines, so you don’t have to stress about the logistics!
3. Timing & Lighting Know-How
The park’s lighting changes throughout the day depending on location and season. I help couples plan the best timeline for photos, whether that’s catching sunrise over the mountains or golden hour along Going-to-the-Sun Road. I know when the crowds are lowest, what areas get harsh light, and how to pivot if the weather throws us a curveball (which it often does!).
4. Prepared for ALLLL the Elements
Glacier can be so unpredictable! One minute it’s sunny and warm; the next, it’s raining or snowing. As an experienced Glacier National Park elopement photographer, I come prepared for all types of weather and know how to keep sessions fun, relaxed, and safe, no matter what the day brings. I’ll also have a plan B (and C) in my back pocket for any curveball that the park throws at us!
5. Local Vendor Connections
Need a florist, officiant, or hair and makeup artist who can meet you in the middle of nowhere for your elopement? I’ve got trusted local connections and can help you build a dream team that’s reliable and familiar with Glacier’s remote nature.
6. Stress-Free Experience
Ultimately, hiring a photographer who truly knows Glacier means you get to focus on what matters most, which is your relationship and the experience of getting married in an epic place. I’m here to guide you, support you, and help make the process feel simple and enjoyable from start to finish! I am both your photographer AND planner for your Glacier National Park Elopement 🙂

Spring: Snow capped mountains and green fields! The weather can still be chilly, but If you’re dreaming of a backdrop with snow capped mountains, this is the time to go! Just be aware that you will not be able to access locations like Logan Pass and Big Bend at this time of year. Here is an example of a mid June elopement in the park!
Summer: Summer is the busiest and warmest time in Glacier, and for good reason! The park is in full bloom, with lush greens, vibrant blues, and even wildflowers making an appearance from late July to early August. During these months, Going-to-the-Sun Road is fully open, connecting the East and West sides of the park. If you don’t mind the crowds, summer is truly spectacular. You can check out an example of summer in Glacier on my blog here and here! Summer is the most popular time to elope in Glacier National Park, so be aware that you may be working around crowds.
Fall: If you’re looking for crisp air, fewer crowds, and absolutely unreal golden hues, fall is the season for you. Glacier’s autumn colors are stunning, with vibrant yellows and rich golds painting the landscape. This is my personal favorite time of year in the park! The crowds are dwindling, the crisp air is moving in, and the golden hues photograph so beautifully! Check out this Going to the Sun Road elopement for a glimpse of the park’s breathtaking autumn scenery.
Winter: While most of the park is inaccessible during winter, Lake McDonald remains open year-round, and a winter elopement here is nothing short of magical! If you’re willing to embrace the cold, you’ll be rewarded with stunning snowy landscapes and a truly intimate experience. The park is basically empty in the winter, so no need to work around tourists!
There are countless breathtaking locations in the park for your ceremony. To explore the full list of approved ceremony sites and important details, visit the official NPS page! You can also check out drive times to each location here.

If you’re planning to get married in Glacier National Park, including exchanging vows or holding any type of ceremony, you’ll need a Glacier National Park special use permit. You can apply up to a year in advance, and I highly recommend doing so as soon as possible. If your first choice location isn’t approved for the ceremony, don’t worry, we can still capture beautiful photos there!
You can apply for your permit here. There is a non refundable application fee of $125 that you will have to pay when submitting your application. Permit application assistance is included in all of my packages, and I’ll guide you through the entire process if you choose to book with me!

Katie and Adam’s Glacier National Park micro wedding is one that I had the honor of capturing, and I’m excited to share it below!

Katie and Adam started their day in Whitefish at a cabin on Big Mountain, where everyone got ready together! The morning was calm and relaxed. Katie, who is also a wedding photographer, was intentional about keeping the day documentary in nature, which is where I thrive! I was so excited when she told me she wanted minimal posing. She wanted real moments, not forced ones and she did such a beautiful job creating space to let things happen as they naturally would! One of my favorite memories was her sitting on the floor, in front of a mirror, doing her own makeup with her dress gently laying on the bench behind her. Something about it just felt so real and relaxed.
We got everyone dressed, including Katie and her stunning Anthropologie wedding dress, with delicate pearls hanging off of her shoulders. Katie and her girls did a first look together, before we moved on to Katie and Adam’s private first look and vow reading.
One thing that is always a toss up with Glacier National Park weddings is the weather! You never know what you are going to get and you have to be ready to roll with the punches. Katie and Adam’s day started with a steady rain. They were troopers and adjusted with ease, moving their private vows to the deck. We knew the weather could change once we entered the park, so we loaded up the cars and hoped for the best! Katie wanted her guests to experience Big Bend, so we made the drive up there (even saw a moose along the way!) and wow, it delivered! The rain moved out, but we still got the most perfect cloud coverage, creating the most perfectly diffused light. Katie and Adam were complete naturals in front of the camera. I swear I barely told them what to do!
The ceremony took place at Apgar Amphitheater, with Lake McDonald as the backdrop. The rain cleared, the clouds lifted, the sun came out, and they had the most beautiful ceremony surrounded by their friends and family!
After the ceremony, we all went down to the shoreline of Lake McDonald for a few more portraits before we called it a day! The brightly colored bridesmaids dresses and parasols popped against the sunny blue skies! I was so obsessed with all of the photos we took down at the lake. Direct light is some of my favorite light to play with! And with the blue skies, colorful dresses and flowers, it made for the most fun and artistic photos. I think they are some of my favorites I’ve ever taken!
Katie and Adam are two of the most kind humans I’ve ever met and I am so honored that I was able to be a part of their Glacier National Park wedding.
